Ephemera
I conceptualized this body of work over four years, and created it over the summer of 2012 with funds from a generous Teaching Artist grant from the Surdna Foundation. The title refers to things that were not meant to last forever-—things like movie tickets, receipts, and, as it turned out, my marriage. The papers that accompanied that relationship in all its stages--wooing through divorce--are the primary ingredients of the work in this series. Many of the materials and equipment I used were also ephemeral: Photo negatives, Letraset, a typewriter. Once so important and novel, these things are now relics. Historical. Obsolete. Evolutionary.
About the Surdna Grant:
The Surdna Foundation invites arts teachers from public arts high schools to apply for funding. Recognizing that such teachers often lack time and resources to reconnect with the artistic processes they teach, Surdna provides grants of $5,500 to enable selected teachers to make art with professionals in their disciplines and stay current with new practices and resources. A complementary grant of $1,500 is awarded to each Fellow’s school to support related post-Fellowship activities.
Acknowledgments:
The Surdna Foundation; Judith J. Katz; Tim Grady; Jennifer Lee; colleagues at Co-op High; Paulette Rosen; Jennifer Davies; Jae Rossman; Dieu Donne; Ken Janke; Slate Liu- Ballard; Grovers; Dr. Dolores Garcia-Blocker; Helen Kauder; Colin Burke; Laura Sonnentag Giraldi; my incredibly supportive friends and family; and my daughter and fellow artist, Lily Grace Sutton.
